Description :

This book examines the growing area of geriatric dentistry, covering the epidemiology of oral diseases in the elderly to maintenance care. The various prosthodontic treatment modalities and their indications are discussed -- from the fabrication of removable prostheses to implant therapy -- with diagnosis and treatment based on scientific evidence.

Treatment rationale is presented in light of recent studies linkingoral to general health and with particular consideration given to the patient's individual set of circumstances. Clinicians and dental students will find it valuable in decision making and treatment planning.

Preface:
My goal in undertaking this project has been to write a textbook that is based, as much as possible, on scientific evidence, with content relevant for both the dental student and the clinician and covering my favorite subject: the prosthetic care of older patients. I am quite aware that excellent modern and sophisticated prosthetic treatment modalities can be applied successfully in the elderly, as well as in adults and younger people.

However, it is often necessary to give great consideration to the patient’s socioeconomic situation—even in economically developed countries—as well as physical and mental status, which may limit treatment possibilities to a high degree. It is my belief and conviction that the principles of prosthetic treatment in geriatric patients should rely on simplicity and take into account the individual patient’s demand for treatment, oral and general health status, socioeconomic conditions, and oral comfort. With this textbook I have tried to develop a scientific foundation for prosthetic treatment planning and treatment methods in older patients.

Or perhaps I have tried to apply prosthetic treatment principles that correspond to my acquired scientific foundation. Both statements are probably true, but nevertheless the book presents a treatment philosophy based on my experience in teaching prosthodontics, in conducting clinical research, and in providing prosthetic treatment for the elderly population.

Review:

"....The text is well illustrated with colour plates and a pleasing aspect is the inclusion of prominent tables throughout the script summarising points being made in the general body of the text. The end of each chapter includes a summary or conclusion and associated bibliography. The references are up to date and reflect the author's attention to detail. This book is a must in any dental library."
John R. Pearson, Prosthodontist

"....In summary, this is a well-documented, organized, and illustrated book. It would be an excellent textbook for geriatric dentistry and graduate prosthodontics courses. It provides one of the best reviews of denture-related problems in elderly patients and should be essential reading for dentists or dental specialists who perform prosthodontic care for elderly patients."
Meade C. Van Putten, Jr, DDS, MS, Associate Professor of Prosthetic Dentistry, Ohio State University School of Dentistry
